Here's the latest injury update from the Cleveland Indians:
Michael Bourn: Bourn was scheduled to come off the DL yesterday and has requested a few rehab starts in the minors before returning to big league action. Hope to have him back soon.
Best-case scenario: By the weekend
Frank Hermann: Hermann needed to have Tommy John surgery during Spring Training, and is not scheduled to return until 2014.
Best-case scenario: Hermann will be able to start throwing next year and be able to return by mid-season. It's hard to predict Tommy John surgeries though.
Lou Marson: Marson was placed on the 15-day DL last week with shoulder inflammation. In his place, Yan Gomes, who was acquired in the Esmil Rogers trade, has stepped in as back up catcher and done a fantastic job behind the plate, while also lending his bat in spot situations with two-triples and two-dingers already.
Best-case scenario: Marson should be back after his 15-day stint.
Brett Myers: After four consecutive appearances of giving up home run's, Myers was placed on the DL with mild right elbow tendinitis and a mild UCL sprain. He is not slated to resume throwing for another week. In his place, Trevor Bauer and Corey Kluber are receiving opportunities at the big league level.
Best-case scenario: Myers retires? All kidding aside though, he could be out for quite a while. We won't know anything until the team can monitor him after he resumes throwing next week.
Nick Swisher: Swisher has right shoulder soreness, however he is able to come back any day. When signed in the off season, he was slated to be the starting first baseman, however with the injury to Michael Bourn, he has been asked to shift to right field on occasion. Swisher says he will do whatever he can to help the team. His bat has suffered a little lately, so the time off may help. Expect to see him back tonight or tomorrow.
Best-Case Scenario: If it was playoff baseball, Swisher could play tonight. But, expect him to take another day off and hopefully be back and healthier. Swisher is just 4-for his last 25.
Josh Tomlin: Went under Tommy John surgery late last 2012, and could be back in the later part of 2013.
Best-case scenario: Hard to say once again, but hopefully by the time he is able to come back and throw, the Tribe have already locked in their 5 best starters.
Blake Wood: Don't forget about Blake Wood. The Indians claimed Blake Wood off of waivers from the Kansas City Royals this off season. He could be back mid season after having Tommy John surgery in 2012. If some of the pitching does not step up, it would not be an unrealistic possibility to see Blake Wood in action for the Indians in some sort of outing this season.
Best-case scenario: Once again, hard to say with Wood. Could provide some much needed depth, but we will keep you updated on his status.
That's your tribe injury update for May 1st!
